Tiger Woods – The Demigod Who Stumbled

Probably no other golfers in the history who was as popular as Tiger Woods as he has been since he turned pro. And probably, no other golfer or athlete, for that matter, who was as marketable as he has been since turning pro in 1996. Probably, no other mega sports celebrity who was involved in a high-profile sex scandal that rocked and shocked the whole world.

When he turned pro in 1996, he rewrote the world golf history by making himself the youngest ever to turn pro. The following year, 1997, he won his first major tournament by taking The Masters title with a record score of 18-under-par 270, by a record margin of 12 strokes over his closest rival making him the youngest-ever to win the tournament. That win, he set 20 Masters records and shared other 6 records with others in the tournament’s history. The impressive early victory in his young age has caught the attention of world media and have since been following his every move.

He went on to top the world ranking in that same year after winning another 3 more PGA events in just less than a year since turning pro. That made his meteoric rise as the fastest ever in ranking history. The 1997 marked Tiger Wood’s phenomenal ascent to the golf world’s ranking and establishing himself as the golf world’s biggest name which he sustained until now.

The 1999 season up until 2002 season Tiger Woods may have found his biggest achievements in his career winning back to back major tournaments. During this 4-year period, he garnered four grand slams in 2001, which no other golf players in history achieved such feat. During the 2000 season, he won three major titles and continued his dominance in the sport in 2001 in what could be the climax in his golfing career by winning all four major championship titles which was widely touted as Tiger Slam.

Every athlete, or every person for that matter, has his own days in the sun. Everyone of us is not perfect. We’re not Gods. We commit fault from time to time, or make it sometime. It’s part of being mortals. But celebrities, especially when people view them as heroes, can’t afford to make faults, or at least in the glaring eyes of the media. Most sports heroes are cut above the rest, or so they say. They are demigods to the eyes of many. They are perceived to be perfect mortals. Many people think sports heroes, like Woods, are bestowed with such power to resist from sinning.

Unfortunately, they are not. So when the news about Tiger Woods‘ infidelities broke out, many were shocked as if they can’t believe he can do it. Some of them even refused to believe, saying it’s not true. That it’s just a hearsay and that there’s no truth about him engaged in any extra-marital affairs. But it soon dawned on them that his infidelities were really true when Tiger admitted it live on international network and apologized to his fans.
